Matariki at Matakana Village - Wai, Kai & Kapa Haka

Wai, Kai & Kapa Haka – A Matariki Celebration at Matakana Village

🗓 Friday, 20 June 2025
🕚 11am – 3pm
📍 Matakana Village

Matariki is a time to reflect, reset, and come together as whānau — and there’s no better place to celebrate than Matakana Village. Join us for Wai, Kai & Kapa Haka, a vibrant Matariki event set beside the serene Matakana River, where freshwater meets the sea.

In partnership with the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust, this special gathering will feature Kapa Haka from our local kura (schools), live music, storytelling, and plenty of whānau-friendly activities. It’s a day to experience the beauty and meaning of Matariki through immersive cultural moments, hands-on fun, and incredible kai — all in the heart of our beautiful village.

This year, our focus is wai (water) — the lifeblood of our whenua. As the Matariki stars Waitī and Waitā shine above, they remind us of our deep connection to freshwater and the ocean. In collaboration with Friends of Awa Matakanakana (FOAM), we’ll take time to reflect on the role our rivers, estuaries and moana play in our lives, and how we can protect them for generations to come.
